Lessons While Pulling Weeds
By Pastor Jack Hayford

Keeping a lawn and garden can mean an almost daily warfare with weeds. You've got to keep ahead of 'em. If you don't, they can take over with amazing speed.

During a recent weeding session, I began thinking on the way my flesh can provide "ready soil" for carnal ways. How quickly such weeds infest my life, sink their tangled roots, and raise their ugly heads! As I dug and chopped, pulled and sprayed, I began to tabulate a running inventory on the subject of weeds. I'll leave the list with you for your own meditation and internal gardening.

  1. Weeds grow more easily than the plant I want.
  2. Weeds often look innocently beautiful while small, but grow dry and ugly when given their place.
  3. You can hardly ever remove weeds without getting on your knees.
  4. Most weeds can be removed much more easily if they are first soaked with water.
  5. Some weeds' roots are so deep it takes the pressing of a blade into the soil to loosen the root and remove it.
  6. The removal of weeds by hand requires a delicate balance of gentleness and firmness: gently loosening, firmly removing.
  7. Weeds spring up most quickly in previously uncultivated soil (i.e., where something new is now happening, but nothing fruitful was growing before).
  8. Careful attention to weeds at the early, critical season prevents multiplication and makes for a lovelier garden.
  9. Weeds often look like the plant you want. It takes discernment to uproot the right sprout.
  10. Weed removal take patience. if you try to hurry, you can break the root beneath the soil, guaranteeing its reemergence. Don't rush the process.
  11. After the weed is removed, all of the soil's energy may be directed to the intended plant's fruitful growth.
  12. When you are done pulling weeds, you have a deeper appreciation for "the plot."

Now go back and think about weeding again.

Happy (and holy) gardening!
