How Long the Night
By Pastor Jack Hayford

How long the Night? I do not know, and
God in Mercy does not show me how...
               How long the night.

How soon the harvest? I can't tell, and
He whose sun and rain will swell the
                seed—He does not say.

How long until? How long to wait? How
        long before at Heaven's gate
               will justice come?

Pray, Watchman, say, when it comes the dawn?
My hope, my faith are nearly gone."
               How long the night?

An answer comes now through the shade;
The voice is firm—I am afraid
              I've tempted God.

Have I been rash? What will He say?
He speaks, His words my fear allay,
                "The Day is sure."

"The day is sure, my child beloved,
        The darkness covering above you
               cannot last."

"Would you could see it from my side,
it thins; it cannot long abide the light
              I pour your way."

It comes—the Day!
"And do not fear the seed won't grow,
beneath the sod where it was sown."

It's growing now.
"The harvest comes, it will not wait, tho'
it seems long, it's growing late,

I tell you true,
       The harvest comes,
              I promise you."

O Lord, my eyes can only see the
earth-side shape of things to be,
                And tho' I cry,

I now confess Your Word, my own, and
fix my heart on You alone, who
               speak to me.

I say,
The Day is sure, the night will fade, the
       harvest—tho' it seems delayed—
              will surely come.

My eyes shall see it, all around, the light,
        the wheat upon the ground,
               When morning comes,
               When harvest comes,
        My eyes shall see.
